Creaking or Squeaking Noise When Pedaling (Mid-Drive Bikes)

Your mid-drive bike (V Rook Mid Drive or Colt Mid Drive) makes a creaking or squeaking noise when pedaling, especially going uphill or under heavy load. This is almost always a tightening issue — not a defect.

Mid-drive motors transmit significantly more torque through the frame than hub motors, which means every bolt in the drivetrain needs to be properly torqued. A loose bolt anywhere in the system creates a creak.

Check These Bolts (In Order of Likelihood)

1. Crank arm bolts — The most common source. Tighten both crank bolts to the torque spec on the crank (usually 12–14 Nm).
2. Motor mount bolts — Check the bolts securing the Ananda mid-drive motor to the frame.
3. Bottom bracket — The bottom bracket can work loose under the high torque of a mid-drive. Check and retighten.
4. Pedals — Pedals thread into the crank arms and can work loose over time. Tighten with a 15mm wrench (remember: left pedal is reverse-threaded).
5. Chainring bolts — The chainring on a mid-drive motor can develop play. Check all chainring bolts.
6. Seat post clamp — A loose seat post can creak in ways that feel like they're coming from the drivetrain.

If Creaking Persists

If the noise continues after tightening all bolts, bring the bike to an authorized dealer. They have calibrated torque wrenches and the experience to identify the exact source. This issue has been resolved in every reported case by properly torquing the fasteners listed above.
